Research Grants

The US government allocates funds for research under the research grants. These research grants are used for researches in the medical, scientific, environmental, technical and sustainable agriculture projects. Since researching about any subject requires a lot of time, money and highly-specialized equipment, research grants from the government and private organizations play a crucial role in research activities.

In recent years, extensive research in the field of cancer, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases, human genome, along with exploring space and creating modest but sustainable houses have been done. These researches have been done and are still being carried out due to funding from research grants, particularly from the government.

These research grants from the government are usually offered to large federal agencies like the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense and a few other federal agencies. These large federal agencies in turn fund research institutes and universities that carry important researches for new discoveries in the field of science, astronomy, environmental science, engineering, physics, Nano science, etc. Besides federal research grants, grants from private sources also help a great deal in making important research-related activities.

Though federal research grants are the most-sought after, the process of applying for grants is also quite tedious. One has to know about the specific research areas funded by different federal agencies and then fulfil the criteria set by the federal agencies to obtain relevant grants for research. However before offering research grants, the type of research that is being carried out and the length of the research are taken into consideration. Research grants are offered in varying amounts. Sometimes full grants are provided while for some there could be a limited funding or grant awards offered. However for any kind of funding from the government, one has to first look up to Grant.gov for clear and detailed information.

Federal research grants can be restricted where it is generally awarded to universities, small governmental research bodies and local research bodies. In case of unrestricted federal research grants, any officially registered, 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, businesses and individuals can apply for carrying out research in their desired subject.

Private foundations similarly also offer research grants. However these private foundations usually offer research grants for researching about a specific disease or illness or finding cures. The Avon Foundation, The Prevent Cancer Foundation, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America are few private foundations doing remarkable research work in the specific illness or disease. These private foundations also offer research grants for researches in related areas.

However it is the combined effort of the federal research grants and private foundations that

advanced research in about every field are conducted by institutes, foundations and universities for the betterment of the society.
